An Interview with Katie of Skunkboy Creatures

Today I had the pleasure of learning a little bit more about my most favoritest of favorite plush designers on Etsy. Skunkboy Creatures was one of the first shops I stumbled into when I was an Etsy newbie, and I've been hooked ever since. Take a moment to learn more about Katie and her lovely shop.

Tweets

I started sewing plush animals about 2 years ago. I had an idea in my head and just went for it. It was this little brown owl (not a skunk, surprisingly!) and I toted it around for weeks, like a little kid.  After I made it through the pains of developing a couple more animals, I decided it was something that I couldn’t help but do.

Owls

I am learning these days that most of my inspiration comes from the seasons and their changing. Every time the weather turns, it’s like a light bulb blows up in my head and ideas start flowing. I suppose that is my
version of crafting for fun. I don’t get to do much recreational crafts because I stay so busy, so it’s a way to have some fun and justify it to myself.

If I had to choose a favorite animal, it would be a toss up. Betty the Giraffe is so pretty and I just adore her. Ophelia the Octopus is somewhat painstaking, so I become instantly attached to her. I also love Robin Robin, Mangy Little Lion, and Waffle the Zebra. I guess I have a lot of favorites. :) I used to keep all of my
originals, but I’ve gotten rid of most of them over the last year or so. The only originals left around my house are Ophelia and Frank the Bunny. I can’t part with them for some reason.

Giraffe

Skunkboy Creatures is a name that often gets chuckles… or very strange faces. “Skunk-Boy?” they say. After I had been making animals for several months, my muse, best friend, and ultimate encourager was moving to a different country. I decided to make her a skunk to take with her. When I was considering names for my shop, the skunk instantly popped back into my head. I really wanted a name that would pay homage to her,
since she was the one who constantly pushed me to grow and kept me going. Out of that, Skunkboy Creatures was born.

Snails

Describing my animals in 3 words: cute (obviously! Even when I try not to make something cute, it just happens.), scrappy, endearing. Hopefully these are accurate. ;)

you can read my blog at skunkboycreatures.blogspot.com, or hopefully you will see me at Renegade Chicago on December 5 and 6.

Thanks, Katie, for taking the time to show us around your world of cute little creatures!
